What Is Hexagram 11?
Hexagram 11 is Tai, Peace: Earth above Heaven. Although Heaven is visually below Earth, their tendencies draw them toward one another: yang rises and yin descends. The result is communication across levels, with strong creative energy entering ordinary life and receptive conditions helping it take form.
Tai describes an opening in which small, obstructive influences recede and substantial contributions can arrive. It is not permanent ease. Its lines show allies advancing together, broad capacity at the center, the inevitable return of difficulty, and finally a wall collapsing back into its moat. Peace must be actively governed.

The Meaning of Hexagram 11
Peace is circulation rather than stillness. Information travels, different groups cooperate, and resources reach useful places. This allows ambitious work because initiative and support are connected. The appropriate response is inclusive stewardship: bring distant needs into view, cross necessary boundaries, and avoid forming a private faction around success.
Every level of Tai contains awareness of reversal. Level ground eventually slopes, and what goes out eventually returns. This does not cancel the favorable moment; it makes good use of it urgent. Build institutions, agreements, and habits that can survive when effortless harmony fades.
The Image of Hexagram 11
Heaven below Earth creates a fertile interchange: the powers of initiative and reception meet rather than occupying sealed domains. The natural picture is one of seasons and growth, where energy from below and conditions above participate in a living cycle.
Translate that image into channels. Make it possible for strategy and execution, leadership and community, or intention and daily practice to inform each other. Celebrate flow without assuming it will maintain itself. The work of peace is to distribute benefit and prepare for change.
The Six Lines of Hexagram 11
Lines are numbered from the bottom of the hexagram upward. In a cast, give particular attention to any positions that appeared as changing lines.
Line 1
Pulling one blade of grass brings the connected roots with it. At the beginning of openness, people of shared purpose can advance together. Choose companions whose integrity strengthens the movement, and remember that your action affects the network attached to you. Coordinated entry is fortunate.
Line 2
The second line can include rough ground, cross the river without a boat, remember the distant, and relinquish factional loyalties. Peace needs breadth and courage, not comfort alone. Take on neglected work, include remote interests, and judge by the center rather than by closeness to friends.
Line 3
No plain remains forever without a slope, and no departure occurs without return. The middle of prosperity already contains change. Stay steady through difficulty and do not treat natural fluctuation as betrayal. Enjoy what is available while maintaining the practices that make reversal manageable.
Line 4
Those above descend lightly and trust their neighbors without relying on wealth or warning. The exchange between levels becomes direct. Meet others without using position as insulation, and allow sincere cooperation to replace elaborate control. Access should be real, not a performance of openness.
Line 5
The marriage of King Yi's daughter represents a high position entering a lower relation with fitting humility. Alliance succeeds because dignity and reciprocity replace status competition. When forming a partnership, honor the terms and the people involved rather than using rank to dominate the bond.
Line 6
The city wall falls back into its moat. The period of expansion has reached reversal, and military force will not restore the old order. Bring commands close to home, reduce scope, and deal with immediate responsibilities. Clinging to a vanished structure creates humiliation; consolidation is the sober task.
What Hexagram 11 Can Mean in Different Situations

Communication and mutual accommodation can deepen connection now. Use the open period to create durable ways of addressing difference. Harmony is healthiest when neither person's status, resources, or social circle controls the relationship.
Work and Career
Strategy and execution may finally be aligned. Include overlooked contributors and use access to remove bottlenecks. Build processes for the later downturn instead of assuming favorable cooperation will continue without care.

An opening can support forward movement, especially with principled allies. Consider benefits beyond your immediate circle and plan for reversal. A good decision under Tai improves circulation rather than merely exploiting favorable conditions.
