What Is Hexagram 36?
Hexagram 36 is Ming Yi, Darkening of the Light: Earth above Fire. Fire is hidden beneath earth, so illumination remains alive but cannot safely display itself. It describes a time when integrity must be protected within a hostile or confused setting.
This is not the opposite of progress in a simple positive-negative sense. Progress makes light public; Ming Yi asks how light survives when public display would invite harm. The work is preservation, not surrender.

The wound reaches the thigh, and help comes through a strong horse. Accept practical assistance that restores mobility. Do not confuse needing support with losing principle.
Line 3
The hunt reaches its leader in the south, but the injury is not yet fully resolved. Find the source of disorder without exposing every vulnerable part of yourself.
Line 4
The light enters the left side of the belly and reaches the heart of the dark. Knowledge of the hidden danger is painful but useful. Move quietly and keep your judgment intact.
Line 5
The darkening of the light concerns the ruler; steadfastness in difficulty is possible. Institutional pressure may be real. Preserve truth through disciplined conduct rather than reckless confrontation.
Line 6
The light is hidden in the earth. At the end, withdrawal protects what cannot yet be changed. Keep the flame alive and wait for conditions in which action can be effective.
