What Is Hexagram 40?
Hexagram 40 is Xie, Deliverance: Thunder above Water. Thunder breaks through the dangerous water below, describing relief after tension, fear, or entanglement. The key is to release what no longer needs to be carried.
Deliverance follows obstruction but is not simply its positive mirror. Jian teaches how to turn and seek help; Xie describes the conditions after the knot loosens, when prompt forgiveness and departure prevent a new knot from forming.

The Meaning of Hexagram 40
Xie favors a clean reduction of pressure. Once danger has passed, return to ordinary work and avoid keeping enemies alive through suspicion. Release can involve apology, pardon, repayment, or physically leaving a constricting place.
The lines progress from freeing the feet to removing harmful influences, then warn against celebrating release before the situation is truly clear. Relief is a phase that still needs judgment.

Thunder rises from water, stirring and clearing the storm. The natural image is movement after confinement, not permanent excitement. Pressure can dissipate when the path is opened.
Identify the knot that has actually loosened and the residue that still needs attention. Act quickly where delay would recreate danger, then return to a simpler rhythm.
The Six Lines of Hexagram 40
Lines are numbered from the bottom of the hexagram upward. In a cast, give particular attention to any positions that appeared as changing lines.
Line 1
The toes are freed. The first release is modest but important: remove the immediate constraint without creating a larger disturbance.
Line 2
Three foxes are caught and yellow arrows are received. Skillful action removes several hidden nuisances and earns the tools needed for the next stage.
Line 3
A person carries a burden while riding, attracting robbers. Displayed privilege or unnecessary baggage invites trouble. Travel more simply and remove what makes you conspicuous.
Line 4
Free yourself from the toe; companions arrive. Once the central obstruction is released, trustworthy allies can move with you. Do not cling to the old entanglement out of habit.
Line 5
The exemplary person frees himself, and the ordinary person is forgiven. Release may require both inner change and a merciful social response. Let accountability end the cycle rather than prolonging it.
Line 6
The ruler hunts a hawk on a high wall and succeeds. At the top, decisive action removes the source of harm. Precision matters: target the obstruction, not everyone around it.
What Hexagram 40 Can Mean in Different Situations
Relationships
After conflict eases, make the repair concrete and stop rehearsing the case against each other. Forgiveness does not require renewed closeness. Release what is finished while keeping necessary boundaries.
Work and Career
Remove the bottleneck, simplify the handoff, and return the team to ordinary execution. A departing problem should not be replaced by a hunt for new blame. Keep accountability precise.
